More Captain Cook Memorial Museum Children’s Workshops for easter and half term. Back by popular demand! Starting with... PRINT-A-TIPUTA on 11TH APRIL Print and wear home your very own Polynesian style Poncho (Tiputa) using paints, rolling sticks, rubbing techniques, natural woven printing blocks, indigenous leaf fronds and personalised printing shapes. Learn how precious tapa cloth, made into Tiputas, was once meticulously decorated with pigments and presented to important people (Island Chieftains,) imbuing the wearer with great power and protection. Make and present yourself with a Tiputa in a similar way to the Islanders, who Captain Cook met and traded with on his adventures. Award yourself an attractive outfit of honour and strength - a Polynesian take on the ‘magic cloak’ or protective, status affirming 'cermonial robes' of Kings and Queens, adopted by Western society. Take a look at the actual garments being replicated in the workshop, as part of the museum’s new exhibition ‘Fashion and Fibres: Island Dress in Polynesia.’ Both workshop and garment are included in Museum Admission Price! No need to book. Just turn up! Brought to you in the newly opened, self contained Captain Cook Memorial Museum education room by Rachael Boddington

Scarborough Museums Trust is going green this Christmas, with a traditional Father Christmas at the town’s Rotunda Museum. The green Father Christmas will find his way into the circular building – despite its lack of chimneys – and take up residence to greet families in his special grotto on Saturdays December 7 and 14. The grotto will be designed by artist Rachael Boddington, from Whitby’s Glittermoth factory, who said: “I’ve imagined the grotto with a coastal cave twist, harnessing carefully selected lighting and textural elements to restore some old fashioned wonderment into a pre-Christmas treat to see Santa." Debbie Seymour, chief executive of Scarborough Museums Trust, said: “We’re quite old-fashioned about these things here at the Trust, so wanted our Father Christmas to be green, not red-and-white. “It’s believed that he only became red-and-white in the 1930s, when a certain American soft drinks company represented him that way to tie in with their branding.” Families with children can visit Father Christmas in his grotto at the Rotunda between 10am and 4pm on both Saturdays. Entry to the Rotunda is free on both days for both adults and children. Entry to the grotto is £3 per child (including Christmas present). The Scarborough News - 21 November 2013 . This Tongan Crab Claw Canoe Sail replica is the latest in a line of commissions Rachael has produced for The Captain Cook Memorial Museum Whitby. With just a couple of C18th sketches as a guide and no surviving reference (other than a fragment housed by the British Museum), Rachael built this sail from coconut hanging basket liners, scrim, hessian, wire, glue, plumbing pipe and finished it with brushed hempen rope. It currently has pride of place in the attic where Captain Cook lodged as a young apprentice, central to the special exhibition 'Oceans apart! Canoes of the Pacific' which runs until 3rd Nov. Winner of the Gold Award 2013 for the best small visitor attraction in Visit England's Awards for Excellence, The Captain Cook Memorial Museum offers all a chance to look at the variety of canoes and catamarans which astounded Captain Cook and his men with their beauty, speed and manoeuvrability. Showing an array of drawings, plans, models, along with a dramatic Maori canoe prow which has not been seen in public for over 100 years!
