PRINT-A-TIPUTA on 11TH APRIL
Print and wear home your very own Polynesian style Poncho (Tiputa) using paints, rolling sticks, rubbing techniques, natural woven printing blocks, indigenous leaf fronds and personalised printing shapes. Learn how precious tapa cloth, made into Tiputas, was once meticulously decorated with pigments and presented to important people (Island Chieftains,) imbuing the wearer with great power and protection. Make and present yourself with a Tiputa in a similar way to the Islanders, who Captain Cook met and traded with on his adventures. Award yourself an attractive outfit of honour and strength - a Polynesian take on the ‘magic cloak’ or protective, status affirming 'cermonial robes' of Kings and Queens, adopted by Western society.
Take a look at the actual garments being replicated in the workshop, as part of the museum’s new exhibition
‘Fashion and Fibres: Island Dress in Polynesia.’
Both workshop and garment are included in Museum Admission Price!
No need to book. Just turn up!
